Equality and Inclusion

Gender Equality

Labor is committed to advancing women’s rights and achieving true gender equality. Recognising the systemic barriers and discrimination faced by women, we have already implemented several policies and legislative reforms including the biggest investment in women in 40 years.

These include:

  • Passing the Closing the Gender Pay Gap bill, which requires employers to publish gender pay gap information.
  • Extending the eligibility for the single parenting payment, the majority of which goes to women.
  • Expanding Paid Parental Leave, giving households more flexibility in how they spend quality time with their child.
  • Making childcare cheaper for 1.26 million families, further boosting women’s economic participation.
  • Investing $69 million in women’s health and wellbeing, including helping improve medical research focusing on women’s health.
  • Labor is dedicated to ending family, domestic and sexual violence against women. Since coming into government, we have:
    Passed the Respect@Work legislation.
  • Launched the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children.
  • Invested over $4 billion to increase funding for community services – these are highly feminised workforces that deliver services for women, including women’s safety initiatives.

I am deeply committed to joining the fight for gender equality, not only because I am a father of a daughter, but because it is the right thing to do. Our parliament, our community, our economy, and our workplaces all benefit from women’s participation.

LGBTIQ+ Rights

It’s a great privilege to represent such as diverse and vibrant electorate, which has at its heart the remarkable Victorian Pride Centre. I am proud to be an ally and advocate for the LGBTIQ+ community. I believe everyone deserves to celebrate who they are, without fear of discrimination. I will continue to work with the community to ensure that their voices are heard and their their rights and are upheld and strengthened.

Combatting Antisemitism

As a proud member of the Australian Jewish community, I am deeply committed to combatting racism and antisemitism wherever it appears. Since coming to government, we have introduced legislation to ban the trading and display of Nazi symbols. Through my work as Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), I will continue to encourage the adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism across our institutions, and promote the inclusion of Holocaust studies across all State and Territory education curriculums.
